Presentation transcript:

Water Pollution, water cycle, flooding and urbanization

Steps of the water cycle Evaporation-liquid turns to gas (water vapor) Condensation- gas turns to liquid (clouds) Precipitation-rain and snow Runoff-water flows down mountains and surfaces into streams and lakes Infiltration- water soaks into ground (groundwater) Transpiration- water absorbed by trees and released into air as water vapor

Point Source pollution Know exactly where the pollutants are coming from

Non point pollution Can not trace the exact source of a pollutant

The Headwaters

Meandering Stream

Flood plain-area of land around a river that floods

What causes flooding of rivers?

What causes rivers to flood? Too much rain and snow melt!!!!

Urbanization can cause floods Removal trees means less infiltration More roads and buildings mean more runoff http://gis.uncc.edu/URBAN/visualizations/visual_anim_charreg.html

Great flood of Memphis 2011

What can we do to prevent floods What can we do to prevent floods? Build levees and Limit urban development

Hurricane Katrina levee breaking in New Orleans, LA

Mouth of a river
