GAN SOPHIE ,YANNIK,MABLI A OLIVER HOW THEY MADE PIRATES GAN SOPHIE ,YANNIK,MABLI A OLIVER

How it all began Gideon Defoe wrote a book called Pirates and the cast loved it. This film is CGI and stop motion. The producer is Julie Lockheart ;The director is Peter Lord. They had a meeting and decided for this film to look realistic and not a cut out animation.

DESINGING THE PIRATES' WORLD They tried to make it as funny as possible. There was no description for the Pirate Captain, only the beard. The Captain could have been any design. Before making the character, you have to sketch them. Norman Gana is the producer and designer. They knew the Pirate Captain HAD to have a beard! One of the most important things in the film was humour. The ship was two separate pieces.

THE story Jeff Newitt was the co-director, him and the director had a board meeting where they looked over the script and changed what they needed and took out what they didn't. They also checked if the script made any sense.

PUPPET MAKING The Pirate King is the biggest puppet in the film; also he is a funny and outgoing character. Debbie Smith is the design sculptor; also Kate Anderson and Andrew Bloxham are the Puppet designers. Most of the pirates are made out of Silicone There are steel skeletons are inside the puppets too help them move.

Sets Jane Kite his head of sets, Kitty Clay is set dresser and Kim Goerge his the maker of miniature props. They build a cardboard version of the set then make it real. Matt helps the director to make the set more lifelike. With animation you need to over build.

The mouths They used CGI to make the animation for the mouths. Michael Green is the Lip Sync Animator for the mouths. The Pirate Captain has more than 250 different mouths. The mouth is an essential part of the filming business, as it is easier to see what they are saying.

Voice ReCoRdInG Hugh Grant plays the Pirate Captain. Martin Freeman plays Number 2 in the film. And David Tennant plays Charles Darwin. Hugh had to model himself like the his character(Pirate Captain). The story was made out of paper at first and then they made it a lot more realistic.

Live action Video rehearsel They make a reference of what the scene would look like. The animator watches it, and does it like the scene. Jay Grace is the animator director and Loyd Price is the animation supervisor. They try to make the hand motion, the emotions and the movements the same as the reference

animation Julie Peguetor is animator. They act in slow motion for a long period of time, they have to make it believable and its really hard to make the caption wobbly. The animators have to work really hard and whatever they do goes on the screen. They put a lot of ideas from themselves in it.  The director gets the ideas and the animators make it.

Ship in water They animated the ship on land, the camera and the lights were the only things that moved. The water was like gel, after that they played around with it. They knew they had to have a ship (of course). If they made the water too realistic, it wouldn't have been Aardman-style.

Sound They needed a person to do the foot steps like wood for the ship and other materials for other places in the film. And when there where people yelling in the background of the film,  like when its Ham Night there are just two or three people yelling at the top of their voices. There are different footsteps for each person

Music There is an orchestra for the music. There are over 100 people playing music. The music is important because it can be funny, dramatic and more. =
