Answer questions to highlight the devices and their purpose. Speech sample Date: Objectives See examples of argumentative and persuasive language in use, using a famous speech from Dr. Martin Luther King. Answer questions to highlight the devices and their purpose.

Warm-up: ‘I have a dream’...... Do one of the tasks below. Write what you know about this man and statement. Or Write a response to the above statement and this picture.

Quick Context Martin Luther King, Jr. became the predominant leader in the Civil Rights Movement to end racial segregation and discrimination in America during the 1950s and 1960s and a leading spokesperson for nonviolent methods of achieving social change. When it comes to using the language of argument and persuasion, this man ticks all the boxes.

Reading the speech You will notice the speech has coarse language. Certain words and phrases are meant to shock the listener for both attention and dramatic effect. Best if teacher reads it then. Keep an eye out for the devices noted in previous classes as written questions concerning them are up next.

Questions – point, reference, explain What is the purpose of the speech? (Underline Repetition to answer this) How does Dr. King use the word ‘we’ through the speech? (Circle Identification with audience ‘we’) How does he use the metaphor of the ‘bad check’? (Mark (~*#) Metaphor) What is the purpose of his question “when will you be satisfied”? (Mark Rhetorical Question / Anticipatory statement) Choose a phrase you found interesting and explain why.

Cooldown question: The rhetorical triangle Is it hard to put your ego down and consider the audience and topic to be as important as you? I like me so even I find it difficult.
