Questions? Thanks to all Germplasm Enhancement Cooperators for their contributions and efforts. We sincerely hope that your role in the GEM Project has a positive impact on your program. Please share your thoughts and ideas as to how GEM can better accomplish diversifying the genetic base of corn production and reduce crop vulnerability.

Thoughts as GEM transitions New GEM Coordinator/Maize Geneticist needed in Ames Experience with and passion for germplasm introgression Superior communication and collaborative skills Skill in use of statistical and IM tools relevant to plant breeding Staff needs better analytical tools and to import data into database more readily. Germplasm performance information needs to be publicly accessible via a database to supports user queries and information retrieval. Update as data becomes available. GEM needs to leverage US and international network capacities to better evaluate and characterize germplasm in order to deploy appropriate genetic resources to address production challenges.

Thoughts continued… *Cycle time must be reduced. This requires more resources , either internal or via collabors. *Germplasm Access is becoming more challenging not less. Need to access unencumbered, valuable germplasm. *Phytosanitary requirements for germplasm exchange are becoming more rigorous and more testing is required. *AP testing and declarations may be required for exchange. * Technical and managerial skills required for project execution are every bit as rigorous as for a commercial breeder but performed in an environment that is both federal and academic.

Best wishes to all in 2015!
