Nobel Peace Prize

How did it start? On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune to a series of prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace - the Nobel Prizes. His estate today would be valued at SEK 1,702 million… (Sweedish Krona)

Nobel Prize Categories Between 1901 and 2015, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences were awarded 573 times. Nobel Prize Number of Prizes Number of Laureates Awarded to one Laureate Shared by two Laureates Shared by three Laureates Physics 109 201 47 32 30 Chemistry 107 172 63 22 Medicine 106 210 38 31 37 Literature 108 112 104 4 - Peace 96 103+26 65 29 2 Economic Sciences 76 24 17 6 Total: 573 900 341 135 97

What is meant by a “Peace” award? As described in Nobel's will, one part was dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

How Old Do You Have To Be? Malala Yousafzai was 17 (2014) Joseph Rotblat was 87 (1995)

What Happens If You Don’t Want It? Two Nobel Laureates Declined the Prize Jean-Paul Sartre, awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, declined the prize because he had consistently declined all official honours. Le Duc Tho, awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. They were awarded the Prize for negotiating the Vietnam peace accord. Le Doc Tho said that he was not in a position to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, citing the situation in Vietnam as his reason.

Forced to Decline the Nobel Prize! Four Nobel Laureates have been forced by authorities to decline the Nobel Prize. Adolf Hitler forbade three German Nobel Laureates, Richard Kuhn, Adolf Butenandt and Gerhard Domagk, from accepting the Nobel Prize. All of them could later receive the Nobel Prize Diploma and Medal, but not the prize amount. Boris Pasternak, the 1958 Nobel Laureate in Literature, initially accepted the Nobel Prize but was later coerced by the authorities of the Soviet Union, his native country, to decline the Nobel Prize.

Can you get one if you are in jail? Three Nobel Laureates were under arrest at the time of the award of the Nobel Prize, all of them Nobel Peace Prize Laureates: German pacifist and journalist Carl von Ossietzky Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo

Posthumous Nobel Prizes Since 1974, the Nobel Foundation has stopped awarding posthumous Prizes. (prizes to folks who did great things but have since died)

OK How Much Money???? SEK 8 million for 2015…this is about 1.25 million CAD

Years Without a Nobel Peace Prize Do you notice anything significant about these dates? Peace 1914, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1923, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1948, 1955, 1956, 1966, 1967, 1972

Why are the individuals and organisations awarded a Nobel Prize called Nobel Laureates? The word "Laureate" refers to being signified by the laurel wreath. In Greek mythology, the god Apollo is represented wearing a laurel wreath on his head. A laurel wreath is a circular crown made of branches and leaves of the bay laurel (in Latin: Laurus nobilis). In Ancient Greece, laurel wreaths were awarded to victors as a sign of honour - both in athletic competitions and in poetic meets.
