Why is There Evil and Suffering? Why Does Suffering Exist? Humanity is evil (Romans 1:28-32).

Why is There Evil and Suffering? And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. Romans 1:28–32

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Why Does Suffering Exist? Humanity is evil (Romans 1:28-32). The world is broken (Romans 8:18-25)

Why is There Evil and Suffering? For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. Romans 8:20–22

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Not always due to personal sin (John 9:1-3; Luke 13:1-5).

Why is There Evil and Suffering? As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. John 9:1–3

Why is There Evil and Suffering? There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:1–5

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Not always due to personal sin (John 9:1-3; Luke 13:1-5). Not because God authors evil (James 1:13-15).

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. James 1:13–15

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Not always due to personal sin (John 9:1-3; Luke 13:1-5). Not because God authors evil (James 1:13-15). All within God’s control (Job 38-42).

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Why Does Suffering Exist? Humanity is evil (Romans 1:28-32). How Should We Respond? Trust God’s Character

Why is There Evil and Suffering? For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:5

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17

Why is There Evil and Suffering? The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Acts 17:24–27

Why is There Evil and Suffering? And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Why Does Suffering Exist? Humanity is evil (Romans 1:28-32). How Should We Respond? Trust God’s character. Remember Jesus’ suffering.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:3–5

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Why Does Suffering Exist? Humanity is evil (Romans 1:28-32). How Should We Respond? Trust God’s character. Remember Jesus’ suffering. Let your suffering bear fruit.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3–5

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Why Does Suffering Exist? Humanity is evil (Romans 1:28-32). How Should We Respond? Trust God’s character. Remember Jesus’ suffering. Let your suffering bear fruit. Remember that suffering will end.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Why is There Evil and Suffering? And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:1–4

Why is There Evil and Suffering? Why Does Suffering Exist? Humanity is evil (Romans 1:28-32). How Should We Respond? Trust God’s character. Remember Jesus’ suffering. Let your suffering bear fruit. Remember that suffering will end.
