Fire From Hell

What is the greatest challenge America has ever faced ?   What’s the greatest challenge you’ve ever faced ? Overcoming the desires of the flesh.

I. Our most difficult struggle against our flesh is the battle to tame our tongue.

The ultimate spiritual battle. James 3: 2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

Becoming Christ-like is a process. James 1: 14-15 Each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Romans 12: 1-2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, ……

II Corinthians 3: 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. II Peter 3: 17-18 Be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

II. Our tongue requires constant control at all times.

The tongue is like a spirited horse. James 3: 3 Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

One’s tongue is never permanently under control. Jeremiah 17: 9 The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately wicked; Who can understand it?

Mark 7: 20-23 And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."

Matthew 12: 34-37 You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. 35 The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. 36 But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

The course public discourse common today is indicative of course ungodly hearts.

III. Though a small member the tongue has a disproportionally large impact.

Nimitz-class Carrier

This mighty ship is turned by only two small rudders.

Our tongue is as powerful as the rudder on the USS Eisenhower. Mark 16: 15 Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

I Peter 2: 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

The words of Jesus have changed the world. 1. Words are mightier than military. 2. Established basic human rights. 3. Elevated the station of women. 4. Laws for compassion and mercy. 5. There are even rules of war.

Your words have great power. Proverbs 15: 1-2 A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly.

Proverbs 12: 25 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad. John 6: 68 You do not want to go away also, do you?" 68 Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.

Galatians 6: 2 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. James 5: 19-20 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

IV. Though small the tongue can be enormously destructive.

Peshtigo Fire, Peshtigo, WI

Man’s tongue is a fire of equal destructive power.

James 3: 6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. Matthew 12:34 … Since the tongue speaks from the heart … Hell effects man’s heart.

Malicious words can destroy men’s souls. Proverbs 12: 18 There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Proverbs 18: 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 26: 28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes, And a flattering mouth works ruin. Psalms 140: 3 They ( evil people ) sharpen their tongues as a serpent; Poison of a viper is under their lips.

An uncontrolled tongue will destroy it’s owner. Proverbs 13: 3 The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

Proverbs18: 7 A fool's mouth is his ruin, And his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 21: 23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue, Guards his soul from troubles.

James 1: 26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. Matthew 12: 36 But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

We must carefully consider our words. Colossians 4: 5-6 Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. I Corinthians 11: 26

of the things we think, say and do The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say and do   1. Is it the truth ? 2. Is it fair to all concerned ? 3. Will it build good will and better friendships ? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned ?
