Tide Pool Ecology Objectives: Describe the ecology of a tide pool.
Ecosystems are made up of both living and nonliving things
Chapter 14.1 Biotic and Abiotic Factors of an Ecosystem
Abiotic and Biotic Factors. Abiotic Factors These are the non-living components of an environment that impact all organisms living in that environment.

Learning Objectives Identify the levels of organization that ecologists study Explain how biotic and abiotic factors influence an ecosystem.
Biodiversity -Biodiversity refers to the collective variety of living organisms in an ecosystem -an ecosystem is the collection of biotic and abiotic components.

Presentation transcript:

What habitat do juvenile black rockfish prefer? •Rocks (abiotic) and living structures (biotic) such as sea anemones, provide valuable habitat for young rockfish. •Marion Mann’s research demonstrated that young rockfish prefer these environments. •Without places to hide, young rockfish are more susceptible to predation.

What habitat do juvenile black rockfish prefer? • Abiotic structure (boulders) and biotic structures (animals like anemones), can provide valuable habitat for young rockfish. • Marion Mann’s research demonstrated that juvenile black rockfish not only prefer structure but also biotic components (other animals) within their habitat. Some marine animals (biotic invertebrates) live to reach ages as high as 300 -1800 yrs. • Without places to hide, young rockfish are more susceptible to predation.
