6Y 3-2-2015 Objectives: Describe the roots of Islam. Agenda: Do Now: What is the difference between fact and opinion? Finish Video Discuss Do Now. Label table points as fact, fallacy, or opinion Preview Unit Begin chapter 12 Homework: Copy title, main ideas, big idea from 12.1; copy and define key terms and people

Fallacy (false) A fallacy is something that is stated as a fact, but it is just not true. It can be proved to be not true. Metaphors – uses different words to describe something else (ex: It’s raining cats and dogs = it’s raining really hard). IF you see metphors, write what it actually means and then figure out if it is a fact, opinion, or a fallacy.

What I know about Islam and Muslims Questions I have about Islam and Muslims They started in Africa. Islam is a religion. ISIS are Muslim. The women wear veils/head coverings. They believe committing suicide is okay. Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are Muslim. ISIS killed Christians – want everyone to be Muslim. They harassed non-Muslims. Islam is based on the teachings of Muhammad, who is believed to be a descendent of Ishmael. Caliphs are leaders of Muslims. Sunnis and Shiites are the two majors sects of Islam. The Ottoman Empire, Safavids, and Mugal Empire were all Muslim. Muslims are people who practice the religion of Islam. They are monotheistic. They have something called Jihad – “struggle” When did Islam become a religion? What did they believe in? Why is ISIS killing people? At what age did they die? How good were their armies? Did they have kings and queens? How long ago did Muhammad live? Are they monotheistic? What is jihad? What language do they speak? Who is their current leader? Where did the name come from? What type of government do they have? How does it work? Who do they worship? Who is their god? What is a Sunni? What is a Shiite? What’s the difference? What are Imams?
