The roadmap towards the implementation of 5G in Europe Maria Belesioti Fixed Network R&D Programs Section Hellenic Telecommunications Organization S.A. (OTE) FITCE Workshop – Thessaloniki, Greece, December 13, 2018

These changes will take place within the forthcoming 5G Introduction Communication networks of the year 2020 will be enormously richer and much more complex than those of today. Virtualisation and software-based network functionalities will further strengthen network flexibility and reactivity By providing a proper means for better network management and By offering new services. These changes will take place within the forthcoming 5G 5G will not only be an evolution of mobile broadband networks, but also will bring new unique network and service capabilities, will create a sustainable and scalable technology, will establish a proper ecosystem for technical/business innovation. FITCE Workshop – Thessaloniki, Greece, December 13, 2018

Transforming traditional networks The whole ICT ecosystem is moving from technology-driven approaches to service-driven ones. Next-generation network deployments will need to satisfy more flexible and varied requirements which will be dictated by the needs of specific stakeholders/ applications/ services. Technology-wise, this implies the need for transforming the traditional network infrastructures and isolated “on- premises” or remote cloud application hosting facilities into open, scalable and elastic ecosystems that can support a large variety of dynamically varying applications and services. FITCE Workshop – Thessaloniki, Greece, December 13, 2018

European Approach to 5G 5G networks Will be more flexible and open. Will evolve more easily than today’s networks Will have embeded sensing, computing and storage resources in a converged and unified infrastructure, able to “orchestrate” the delivery of services in a secure manner. Will provide a significantly higher system capacity than today and solve any anticipated spectrum scarce. Will promote a common network management, in terms of constant performance optimisation, fast failure recovery, fast adaptations to changes in network loads, architecture, FITCE Workshop – Thessaloniki, Greece, December 13, 2018

5G KPIs 1000 times higher wireless capacity (compared to 2010). Saving up to 90% of energy per service provided. Reduction of the average service creation time cycle from 90 hours to 90 minutes. Zero downtime for services provision. Very dense deployments of wireless communication links to connect over 7 trillion wireless devices serving over 7 billion people Enabling advanced user controlled privacy, to guarantee a proper level of protection of the facilities offered. FITCE Workshop – Thessaloniki, Greece, December 13, 2018

Challenges for Infrastructures Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) including augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) reaching even 10 Gbps, e.g. for the support of UHD (e.g. 4K) video streams, while low latency (~2ms for user plane and 20ms for control plane) and high reliability are also required. Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) or Massive Internet of Things (mIoT) to support huge numbers of devices/sensors with lower costs, enhanced coverage, and long battery life, and low latency (~10ms for user plane). Ultra-Reliable, Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) or Critical Communications referring to latency sensitive (1ms-2ms), wireless applications/services including industrial automation, drone control, new medical applications, autonomous vehicles.
