1. With nearly every project he works on, Michel Gondry uses a wide range of artistic techniques, both expensive and cheap. 2. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the cinematographer used only a single 60 watt bulb hanging near the camera lens to achieve the eerie effect of Joel’s memories being erased. 3. This lighting choice stands in stark contrast to higher budget films, which would typically use more complex lighting setups. 4. On the other hand, Gondry’s production of The Green Hornet, with a budget of over $100,000, had over 1,000 effects shots relying heavily on CGI. 5. The result is a film that feels visually distanced from earlier efforts like The Science of Sleep. 6. Speaking about the production, Gondry said, “We knew the special effects for Hornet could not be achieved with my typical organic effects and camera tricks.” 7. His varied use of technology to achieve his vision sets him apart from many other directors, who tend to choose a style and stick with it.
