The Republic of Ireland’s Physical Geography “The Emerald Isle” Hilly with an in-land plain of lush green meadows Marine west coast climate – moist! Slayhead is the most westerly point of Ireland and the second most westerly point of Europe after Portugal. I guess I don't think it's mount slayhead but the area is just referred to as Slayhead. Idk might need to look that up. But the three ridges off to the right in the photo are called the Three Sisters.

The Republic of Ireland’s Economy Harvest blocks of dried peat – spongy decaying-plant material – used for fuel Raise potatoes, barley, sugar beets, turnips, sheep, cattle Manufacturing

The Republic of Ireland’s History of Conflict 1171 - Came under control of England 1500s – Protestant Reformation – Irish stayed Catholic, English were Protestant 1840s – Potato Famine – many people fled to the US to escape starvation 1921 –Ireland gained independence from England Northern Ireland still belongs to England – terrorists are trying to win it back 1 million died of starvation and disease – were upset England didn’t help them The Gov’t has encouraged companies to move to Ireland Economy has grown! Low unemployment

Ireland’s Culture Language – English, but many speak Gaelic Capital: Dublin Population: 5 million (63% live in cities) Religion – mostly Catholic (78%) Irish music & folk dancing Their birthday tradition… An odd Irish birthday tradition is to lift the birthday child upside down and give his head a few gentle bumps on the floor for good luck. The number of bumps should allegedly correspond to the child’s age plus one.

The United Kingdom’s Physical Geography North & West - Rough highlands Moors – damp, treeless, windy highlands Middle - Coal-rich land Southeast - Fertile farmland Northern Ireland – low mountains, valleys, & fertile lowlands Marine West Coast Climate (cool & wet)

The United Kingdom’s Economy Major industrial & trading center London – major trading & financial center on the Thames River Most people work in service industries Farming – wheat & vegetables, but 1/3 of food is imported Why? Lack of farmland and short growing season, large population City of London - London's Financial District

The United Kingdom’s Government Parliamentary democracy Voters elect representatives to a lawmaking body (Parliament) The party with the most reps in Parliament chooses the prime minister (like a president) Current PM: Theresa May  Constitutional monarchy Queen is the official head of state, but has little power Ruled by a king or queen for over 1,000 years!
