Presentation transcript:

Divisions of the Nervous System

Central Nervous System (CNS) Consists of the brain and the spinal cord. made up of mostly interneurons. Spinal cord: a thick column of nerves that connects the brain to most of the nerves in the peripheral nervous system. Brain: three regions the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The spinal cord is only about 45 cm long, while the vertebral column is about 71cm long

Meninges: three layers of protective tissue in the brain and spinal cord Cerebral Spinal Fluid: fluid that cushions, provides nourishment & removes waste from the brain and spinal cord Arachnoid matter is spiderweb like in consistency

Paralysis The loss of muscle function for one or more muscles. Most paralysis is due to injury of the nervous system, in particular, the spinal cord. When something goes wrong with the way messages pass between your brain and your muscles. Strokes, spinal cord injury, broken neck. Bell’s palsy is paralysis of the face. Stroke is when blood to a part of the brain is cut off; no oxygen to that part, so cells start to die An aneurysm is when an artery wall is weakened and it bulges out, sometimes bursting. Cerebral palsy affects a persons ability to move, damage to the brain typically before birth

Two divisions : sensory division and motor division Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Two divisions : sensory division and motor division

The Sensory Division Consists of sensory neurons

The Motor Division Consists of motor neurons Carry out both voluntary and involuntary actions
