doc.: IEEE 802.15-<doc#> <month year> doc.: IEEE 802.15-<doc#> March, 2006 Purpose Channel model sub-committee requires a common channel model for evaluation of PHY layer proposals Bulk of proposed applications require directional antennas Committee needs a realizable model with AoA Require a measurement campaign to: Determine an appropriate channel model with AoA Determine the set of parameters that accurately describes the 60 GHz channel for indoor situations Tony Pollock, NICTA Tony Pollock, NICTA

March, 2006 Observation 1: Clustering in time Tony Pollock, NICTA

Proposed Channel Model March, 2006 Proposed Channel Model Saleh-Valenzuela (S-V) Multipath Propagation Model L = number of clusters; Kl = number of multipath components (number of rays) in the l-th cluster; = multipath gain coefficient of the k-th ray in the l-th cluster; Tl = arrival time of the first ray of the l-th cluster; k,l = delay of the k-th ray within the l-th cluster relative to the first path arrival time, Tl; Tony Pollock, NICTA

March, 2006 Observation 2: Clustering in angle Tony Pollock, NICTA

Proposed Channel Model March, 2006 Proposed Channel Model S-V Model with AoA extension L = number of clusters; Kl = number of multipath components (number of rays) in the l-th cluster; = multipath gain coefficient of the k-th ray in the l-th cluster; Tl = arrival time of the first ray of the l-th cluster; k,l = delay of the k-th ray within the l-th cluster relative to the first path arrival time, Tl; = mean angle of arrival of l-th cluster; = angle of arrival of the k-th ray within the l-th cluster. Tony Pollock, NICTA

March, 2006 Arrival Times The cluster and rays form a Poisson arrival process with distributions given by  = cluster arrival rate; l = ray arrival rate. Regularly spaced or mixed Poisson ray arrival times may also be observed. Tony Pollock, NICTA

doc.: IEEE 802.15-<doc#> <month year> doc.: IEEE 802.15-<doc#> March, 2006 Multipath Gains both the clusters and rays have amplitudes which decay exponentially with time, and are characterized by, = cluster decay factor; = ray decay factor (cluster delay dependent) Tony Pollock, NICTA Tony Pollock, NICTA

Multipath Gain Distribution March, 2006 Multipath Gain Distribution Raleigh ? Nakagami ? Rice ? Log-Normal ? ?? Tony Pollock, NICTA

March, 2006 AoA Distribution Gaussian: = standard deviation, Von-Mises: = degree of non-isotropy, Laplacian: = standard deviation. Each of these can be characterized by the standard deviation of the distribution and is related to the non-isotropy parameters , , or . Tony Pollock, NICTA

Measured Data Processing Steps March, 2006 Measured Data Processing Steps Single-directional propagation channel antenna deconvolution Cluster identification visual vs statistical Cluster/MPC Parameter extraction brute force searches and regression analysis curve fitting (very time consuming) Multipath gains and AoA distributions Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Chi-Square test, probability plotting, Akaike’s information criteria, goodness-of-fit tests etc. etc. Tony Pollock, NICTA

March, 2006 Comments/Caveats Channel model developed to allow fair and timely comparisons between PHY proposals to 802.15.3c Gives a general understanding of the 60 GHz channel and its potential for WPAN applications Given time and resource constraints a generalised stochastic channel model was not possible (although desirable) Further modelling work is required to generate complete understanding of 60 GHz channels For model parameters extracted from measurements see 06-0108-00 (NICT) and 06-0112-00 (NICTA) Tony Pollock, NICTA
