Structure of the Santa Clara Core

Academic Advising for Core 2009 Processes For students –Pre-enrollment in Foundations sequences –Menu of choices for other Foundations and Explorations requirements –Integrations For faculty –Faculty Core Committee (FCC) membership –FCC responsibilities

Integrations Requirements: Advanced Writing and ELSJ Integrations requirements often are embedded in other courses for the Core or for the major Advanced Writing can be satisfied by a stand-alone course or by a course for a major Students may need to be reminded that not all literature courses have been approved for the Core Advanced Writing requirement ELSJ can be satisfied by a stand-alone course, a Foundations or Explorations course, a course for a major, or a Milestone project.

Integrations Requirements: Pathway Advising Pathways promote integrative and intentional learning and the ability to make intentional and reflective educational choices, to study a theme from multiple perspectives, and to perceive connections and relationships among ideas. The mandatory May advising session offers a particularly good opportunity for advisors to guide student thinking about their curricular choices, not only for the major but also for the Core and especially for their Pathways.

Pathway Advising Encourage students to choose Pathways with themes that reflect their interests. After students have identified a Pathway they wish to pursue, advisors can help students select potential Pathway courses according to a range of criteria: Investigation of new areas of study Thinking about past, present and future educational and vocational aspirations Satisfying requirements for their major, minor or Core

Reviewing Pathway Courses Information about the 24 Pathways and associated courses is available at Select Pathways in the left navigation column Use the drop-down box to see Pathway descriptions and all courses approved for each of the 24 Pathways.

Declaring Pathways; Saving Work Students declare their Pathways through e-campus. –Those who enter SCU as freshmen: by spring quarter of their second year. –Transfer students: by the end of their third quarter at Santa Clara University. Students save representative work for each Pathway course on-line. –First-year students who entered SCU in fall of 2009 or 2010 will use Camino. –Transfer students will use Camino. –First year students who entered in fall 2011 will use TaskStream.

Guidelines for Pathways Some courses will be appropriate for more than one Pathway, but students will complete only one Pathway. Students may petition to have one study abroad course count toward a Pathway. Arts & Sciences and Business students will take four courses or 16 units; Engineering students will take three courses or 12 units.

Pathway Guidelines for Transfer Students Transfer students in the College of Arts & Sciences and Leavey School of Business who matriculate with fewer than 44 units will complete the four-course Pathway requirements. Transfer students in the College of Arts & Sciences and Leavey School of Business who matriculate with more than 44 units will complete the three-course Pathway requirements. All transfer students in the School of Engineering will complete the three-course Pathway requirements.

More Pathway Guidelines No more than two courses in a students Pathway may be taken in the same department. Only one course in a Pathway may be a Foundations course (normally taken the first year). A students Pathway may contain no more than two courses in the Religion,Theology & Culture and Cultures & Ideas sequences.

More Pathway Guidelines For four-course Pathways, two courses from the major department may contribute to the Pathway (if approved for the Pathway). For three-course Pathways, one course from the major department may contribute to the Pathway (if approved for the Pathway). No more than two courses in a students Pathway may be taken in the same department.

Selecting Pathway Courses CourseAvail ( provides information about the courses offered in particular quarters and a list of the codes for each Pathway used by the PeopleSoft system. Click on the Core 2009 drop-down box to see a list of courses offered for each Pathway in a particular quarter Click on the five-digit section number of any course to see what Core requirements it satisfies (and to see the course description)

Completing Pathways After students have completed their Pathway courses and at least 100 units, they will write and post a Pathway reflection essay responding to instructions provided in the Pathways Reflection Prompt. Students will usually submit the Pathway reflection essay before they petition to Graduate.

Completing Pathways The reflection essay and the representative work from each Pathway course will be evaluated using the Pathway evaluation rubric, which is available to students as they write their reflection essays. If the reflection essay does not receive a pass, the student will be given feedback and required to revise and resubmit the reflection essay.

Evaluating Pathway Reflection Essays Faculty with courses associated with Pathways will be invited to evaluate small sets of Pathway reflection essays after participating in a norming exercise. If not enough faculty associated with a Pathway volunteer, other faculty will be invited to participate. A pilot Pathway project will test the feasibility of this process.

Fulfilling Pathways Declare a Pathway via ecampus (follow steps on left hand side of the page) After you declare your Pathway, you will be enrolled in a Camino Pathway Community Group, where you will: Save assignments related to your Pathway Access the Pathway Reflection Essay Prompt and the Pathway Evaluation Rubric Submit your portfolio, including the reflection essay and required assignments for evaluation to meet the Pathway graduation requirement
