Determination alcohol in galenical preparations Dr. K. Baheti Y. B. Chavan College of Pharmacy Aurangabad

Determination alcohol in galenical preparation  Galenicals Galen is a Greek anatomist whose theories formed the basis of European medicine. A medicinal preparation composed mainly of herbal or vegetable matter. Pharmaceutical preparations are divided into: Galenical preparation Non-Galenical preparations Galenicals preparation It is prepared by extraction of crude vegetable drugs (active principles) with suitable solvent(s). Terminology : Menstrum : Solvent used for extraction (ex. water, alcohol, ether) Marc : The inert fibrous and other insoluble materials remaining after extraction Types: Infusions, Decoctions, Fluid extracts, Semisolid extracts, Tinctures

Determination alcohol in galenical preparation Determination of alcohol/spirit in liquid galenical preparation. It is obsolete in B. P Various other pharmacopoeia still use it. Ethyl alcohol is commonly used in many preparations Qty and strength of alcohol varies Other industries uses methylated spirit (which contain the traces of methyl alcohol and traces of isopropyl alcohol. Since both methyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol are toxic and injurious to health , their exact percentage determination is essential

Methods to determine alcohol in galenical preparation

Relative density, or specific gravity, is the ratio of the density (mass of a unit volume) of a substance to the density of a given reference material.
