THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
The Circulatory System. Function  Consists of the heart and blood vessels  Carries oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells and remove carbon dioxide.

Animal Anatomy & Physiology. Functions of the Cardiovascular System:  delivers vital nutrients (e.g., oxygen) to all body cells  eliminates waste products.
 Breathing  Oxygen  Nutrients  Imports  Beating  Blood.
Fun facts: You have km of blood vessels You have 100 trillion cells that need transport Your heart is about the size of your fist and has a mass.
Cardiovascular System. I. System Anatomy  Heart  Pumps Blood  Blood Vessels  Deliver blood to cells.
Cardiovascular system FUNCTION Transport nutrients, dissolved gasses, hormones, and metabolic waste COMPOSED OF Heart pumps blood through blood vessels.
HEART ANATOMY & FUNCTION OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Unit 11.1 in Text.
1. Primary Functions 2 The heart is a muscular organ that is responsible for pumping blood to all parts of the body the CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.
The Cardiovascular System  A closed system of the heart and blood vessels The heart pumps blood Blood vessels allow blood to circulate to all parts of.
Wednesday 5/18 Learning Goal: Explain how the cardiovascular system functions as the transport system of the body. Warm up: When blood enters the Left.

Cardiovascular System Benchmarks Home Page Cardiovascular System Benchmarks Standard 14: Organization and Development of Living Organisms SC.912.L.14.36 Describe the factors affecting blood flow through the cardiovascular system. AA

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Objectives Home Page CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Objectives Identify the parts of the heart and the pathway of the blood through cardiopulmonary circulation. Describe how peripheral resistance, (e.g. blood vessel diameter, viscosity and vessel length) affects blood flow through resistance. Identify and explain the effect of blood borne vasoconstriction factors like Epinephrine, Angiotensin II Vasopressin on blood vessels. Explain how diseases like arteriosclerosis reduce the vessel elasticity and the effect of vessel elasticity on blood pressure. Analyze the effects of decreasing or increasing blood volume and its correlation on blood pressure

Day 1: Cardiovascular System Warm-up Activity Home Page Day 1: Cardiovascular System Warm-up Activity What does this animation represent? Point to the part of your chest where you can find this organ How large do you think this organ is? What does it do (function)? Do you think it ever stop beating?

Day 1: Cardiovascular System Cold Heart Facts Click to Play Video on heart function & structure

Day 1: Cardiovascular System What does it do Primary Functions Transportation Gases Carbon Dioxide away from cells Oxygen To cells Nutrients to cells Carbohydrates, Amino Acids, Lipids & Minerals Hormones Endocrine Glands Secretions Immunity Stabilizes pH & Body Temperature

Day 1: Cardiovascular System How does it do it The heart is a muscular organ that is responsible for pumping blood to all parts of the body Click on this image to activate an interactive look at the heart, it’s function and blood flow pathways.

Day 1: Cardiovascular System: 2-Way Circulation There are two Circulatory Pathways: systemic circulation, pulmonary circulation. First click on the video and have students take guided notes. Next, they can put their knowledge to the test by completing the attached worksheet on the anatomy of the heart. The two activities should take no longer than 30 minutes. Briefly compare and contrast the two circulatory circuits Click to Play Blood Vessels, Pulmonary and Systemic Circulation

Day 1: Cardiovascular System: Right Heart Chambers: Pulmonary Circuit Pulmonary circulation involve the flow of blood poor in Oxygen from the right chambers into the lungs. Right Atrium Receives O2-poor blood from body via IVC, SVC First click on the video and have students take guided notes. Next, they can put their knowledge to the test by completing the attached worksheet on the anatomy of the heart. The two activities should take no longer than 30 minutes. Right Ventricle Receives O2-poor blood from right atrium through tricuspid valve Pumps blood to lungs

Day 1: Cardiovascular System: Left Heart Chambers: Systemic Circuit Systemic Circulation involve the flow of blood rich in Oxygen from the left heart chambers to other parts of the body Left Atrium Receives O2-rich blood from Pulmonary Veins First click on the video and have students take guided notes. Next, they can put their knowledge to the test by completing the attached worksheet on the anatomy of the heart. The two activities should take no longer than 30 minutes. Left Ventricle Receives blood from Left Atrium via bicuspid valve Pumps blood into aorta via Aortic Semilunar Valve to body

Day 1: Cardiovascular System: Summary of Vascular Circuits Systemic ( top part of body) Pulmonary ( heart to lungs) First click on the video and have students take guided notes. Next, they can put their knowledge to the test by completing the attached worksheet on the anatomy of the heart. The two activities should take no longer than 30 minutes. Systemic (lower part of body)
