Light: Geometric Optics Chapter Ray Model of Light Light travels in a straight line so a ray model is used to show what is happening to the light.
Can YOU determine the general characteristics of the “image” 1.Its location (closer than, further than or the same distance as the object and the mirror)

Light wave Recall: Light must reflect off of an object before it can be used to see the object. A flat mirror is called a plane mirror. A plane mirror.

10.2 Properties of Light and Reflection. Reflection  When light (electromagnetic waves) hits a surface its direction is changed  This change in direction.
RAY MODEL OF LIGHT. RAY MODEL Light tends to travel in straight lines. Light’s straight lines are represented by rays Each ray ends with an arrow to indicate.

What happens when light waves hit a surface?.  The Law of Reflection from a flat surface states that the angle of incidence is ALWAYS equal to the angle.

Characteristics of an Image

Characteristics of Images Images can be described in many ways but the more most important are: Location Orientation Size Type

Location Images can be Closer to the mirror than they really are Further from the mirror than they really are The same distance from the mirror as the original object

Location mirror Original object closer same as further

Orientation Images can be: Upright compared to the original object (think “same as”) Inverted compared to the original object (think “upside down”)

Orientation original object upright mirror inverted

Size Images can be: Smaller than the original object Larger than the original object The same size as the original object

Size mirror larger original object same as smaller

Type Images can be: Real (can be seen on a surface such as a screen) Virtual (the image does not exist in the real world, only in your brain which is fooled into thinking it exists)
