Futurism, Dada, Surrealism By: Annie and MaKayla

Futurism: 1909 - 1918 Futurism was an Italian movement where they looked to the future and celebrated the age of the machine. It emphasized speed technology, youth, violence, and Modernity. (industrial) Futurism can be seen as one of the most politically charged and aggressive art movements of the 20th century. Marinetti was a master publicist who started the name Futurism. He had so many followers and good ideas that his ideas spread like wildfire through Italy.

Futurism Was the most fundamental movement in the development of abstract art https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntr_Ku7vrI0

Bird in Space - Brancusi He was trying to portray a bird in flight, trying to escape the force of gravity. He used bronze with the highest degree of polish so it seemed machined rather than hand made.

Dada: 1914 - 1918 Dada was a french art movement during WWI that took place in Zurich. Dada is the negative reaction to the horrors and folly of the war. Life and art were meaningless. All concepts of login and rational thought were thrown out the window which created nonsense everything. Many dadaist often chanted “Dada is anti-dada”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCU1562ssJY

Dada The goal of Dada was to not follow any rules, therefore there were no set mediums, and to offend the upper class. Many of the images related to Dada range from many different mediums and have very different looks. Allegedly the word Dada was found when Richard Huelsenbeck stabbed a knife into a dictionary

Dada Fountain, 1917 - Duchamp -He created this piece when he became interested in an art exhibition that claimed to allow any piece of art -His goal was to prove that they were hippocrates. When his piece was rejected he proved just that. -The urinal with a name written on the side agitated artists because it conveyed that art was something to “urinate” on.

Dada The Treachery of Images 1928 - Rene Magritte The translation means, “ This is not a pipe.”

Surrealism: 1920 Surrealism was an art style developed in the 20th century. It was primarily based on the subconscious/nonrational significance on imagery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIi80e1hwIY

Surrealism Was inherited from the Dada movement but it had a lighter feel than that of the Dada movement Dedicated to expressing imagination

Surrealism Mystery and Melancholy of a Street - Giorgio de Chirico

Surrealism Apparition of Face and Fruit-Dish on a Beach 1938 - Salvador Dali
