Organize data in tables and graphs 1.1 To display data

What is statistics? Is the study of how to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data. We use data to: Make decisions, Develop and implement policies.

Who collects data and what do they do with it? Businesses collect data on their products and on consumer behavior. Real estate agents collect data on market trends and on the availability of certain types of properties. Doctors collect diagnostic data on their patients. (i.e to identify the appropriate treatment for a patient) Police collect data on criminal behavior and the frequency of certain crimes. Etc…etc…

What is data? Data is a collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or even just descriptions of things. There are two types of data: qualititative or categorical and quantitative or numerical.

Let’s Practice- qualitative data or quantitative data??? Your friend’s favorite holiday destination. Your teacher’s height The most common names of your generation. Customers in a shop. The name of your classmates favorite teacher. The average student per teacher at your school.

One Variable Data Displays Bar charts Histograms Line graphs Circle graphs Stem-and-leaf plots Box-and-whisker plots

Data Displays need to know… What is the difference between a bar graph and a histogram? What is the difference between a line graph and a line plot? In a box-and-whisker plot, what is the five-number summary? How do you calculate the median? How do you calculate the IQR?

Something to keep in mind… If data: Then use Is organized into categories Bar graphs/double bar graph Changes over a period of time Line graph Compares categories to whole set Circle graph
