Title of notes: MOUNTAINS pg. 22 & 23

Goal for lesson: (Learning target) I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can describe a folded mountain and how it was formed. Today I am… Learning about how tectonic plates movement leads to geological features. So that I’ll be able to… understand how our geological features formed on Earth. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can draw a progression diagram of the creation of a folded mountain.

Bell Work Pick a science word and write the definition. Chapter 6 Goal for lesson (write on self assessment wrksht): I can describe a folded mountain and how it was formed. All late/missing work is due 10/11 NO EXCEPTIONS

Mountains Mt. Everest ( 29, 035 ft. or 8, 850 m ) Is the tallest mountain in the world…..

What is a Mountain? A large mass of rock or landform that rises a great distance above its base (about 300 meters)

Where do mountains form? along convergent plate boundaries: collision of continental crust and continental crust.

How do mountains form? Mountains form from rocks that have been permanently deformed under stress.

What is the Tallest Mountain in the United States?  Mount McKinley, Alaska with an elevation of 20, 320 feet or 6194 meters

Mountain types: Folded Mountains Dome Mountains Fault-block Mountains

EX. Appalachian Mountains Folded Mountains  formed by the folding of rock layers during plate collisions EX. Appalachian Mountains

Folded Mountain: Himalayas Folded mountain animation

Folded or Fold mountains Fold mountains are the most common type of mountain in the world. Himalayas Stretch through China, Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Pakistan. Still being compressed (still getting bigger) Indian plate is colliding with Eurasian plate

Folded or Fold mountains A fold mountain usually displays more than one type of fold. Anticlines and synclines are the most common up-and-down folds that result from compression. An anticline has a ∩-shape, with the oldest rocks in the center of the fold. A syncline is a U-shape, with the youngest rocks in the center of the fold.

There are also underwater mountains: Seamounts Ships use SONAR to make 3-D images of underwater features

Notebook activity pg. 22 LS Create a progression diagram of how a fold mountain was formed. At least three pictures to show the formation Labels (convergent boundary, type of crust, and the folds (anticline and syncline)
