The Exodus The Book of Exodus continues Genesis Continues the story of Joseph (one of the patriarchs) Israelites became numerous Egyptians were worried So, the Egyptians enslaved them Book was written 700 years after the events took place Written during the Babylonian exile – so the people could relate to such a story

Outline of the Book of Exodus The Call of Moses The Exodus event The wandering of the people in the desert The reception of the law- 10 Commandments The approach to the promised land

The call of Moses Like other birth stories – birth, threat to life, secret life, carrying out of mission When Moses was born Hebrew male children were ordered killed His mother placed him a basket and set it adrift Retrieved by Egyptian princess The name Moses means “drawn out”

Drawn out Moses was drawn out of the Nile and saved He drew the Hebrew people out of slavery and lead them to the promised land
