The Succession Crisis Learning outcome- by the end of today you should know the reasons there was a succession crisis. Task: you will teach each other, using words, actions and your memories!

Method: You need to memorise, for each slide- What happened An action The picture on the slide. You only get maximum 1 minute on each reason.

First reason… Alexander III’s children had died before him… then he died.

The second reason is… The Maid of Norway was an infant, so needed help to rule.

The third reason is… The Maid of Norway was a girl, so would not be able to lead an army.

The fourth reason is… Many young children died before their fifth birthday, so the Maid might die young.

The fifth reason is… There were powerful families who might try to seize power, like the Comyns and Bruces.

The sixth reason is… Once the Maid died, there were 3 main claimants to the throne, who all said they were the rightful king.

Why was there a succession crisis in Scotland (1286-1294)
