When an organism grows, repairs itself, reproduces or replaces old cells, new cells need to be made. Every new cell needs its own copy of the genetic code.

Do Now:.  TRANSCRIPTION: process that makes an RNA copy of DNA.  RNA is single-stranded, and T is replaced by U (A-U; G-C)  RNA polymerase makes RNA,
DNA Replication. Each cell within a body contains the same DNA sequence. Why? Before the cell divides, an exact copy of DNA is made- process called REPLICATION.

Friday 3-19-2010 NOTES: Transcription

(1) Transcription Purpose: Copy instructions from DNA  mRNA Where: Nucleus “Players”: DNA mRNA

(2) Transcription Steps Unwind DNA Unzip DNA & Separate Strands Match up complimentary RNA bases to DNA bases. Connect RNA nucleotides together. Connect DNA back together. *Enzymes do all of the work! The End Result: 1 molecule of mRNA RNA genetic code = DNA genetic code

(3) Matching Complimentary Bases DNA Strand New mRNA A T G C

(4) 3’  5’ RNA nucleotides are matched up moving 3’ to 5’ along the DNA template strand. Enzymes can only move in this direction!
