Results of World War I Use the PowerPoint to complete the graphic organizer provided. Most answers will come directly from the PowerPoint but some will come from the notes we took previously in class.

The Russian Revolution First Part Started in February of 1917. Resulted in the overthrow of the czar. People were unhappy the way the czar and his government were running the country. They were also upset over their participation in the war. The Russian army was not able to be very effective in the war and stopped their involvement.

The Russian Revolution PART 2 It took place in October of 1917 and is also called the Bolshevik Revolution. It was led by Vladimir Lenin. This part of the Russian Revolution was more violent than the first. After the revolution, there was a civil war that lasted more than 2 years. The Bolsheviks retained control. Lenin then changed the government and economy into Communist and the Soviet Union was born.

The United States Enters the War The U.S. entered the war in June of 1917. Up to this point, the U.S. had been lending large amounts of money to the Allies in their fight against the Central Powers.

Treaty of Versailles Main Point of the Treaty Ended the war (WWI) An armistice is a temporary stopping of fighting or a truce. It took place outside of Paris, France on November 11th. Main Point of the Treaty Ended the war (WWI) Broke apart old empires Established new countries Established League of Nations: supposed to help keep peace Some countries, especially Germany, were unhappy with treaty

4 Requirements of Germany according to the Treaty of Versailles Germany had to accept full responsibility for the war. Germany had to give up territory to surrounding countries. Germany surrendered its overseas colonies and made their armed forces smaller. Germany had to pay huge reparations to the countries it harmed. WAS THIS FAIR???

International Economy GERMANY – Their economy was ruined by the Treaty of Versailles. FRANCE – Became a dominant European economy for many years. BRITAIN – With Germany no longer a threat, Britain could develop its colonies and obtain their natural resources. How did Germany still remain powerful? Germany’s industrial areas were not taken away. Therefore, Germany was able to rebuild its economy. Within 20 years, Germany was a major European power.

Shifts in Borders

Worldwide Depression All countries had bad economies following the war. Too much money had been spent on the war. 3 main problems: Unemployment – no jobs Businesses fail – shops closed Not much trade – no MONEY!

The Nazis in Germany Poverty caused by unemployment led the people of Germany to lose faith in their government. On January 30th, 1933, Adolf Hitler (leader of the Nazi Party) became Chancellor of Germany. The Nazis gained support by blaming Germany’s problems on the ideas of Communists and Jewish people. Hitler made 2 promises to the Germans: That their country would create jobs. That their country would grow to be the most powerful.
