Wednesday, November 12, 2014 Objective: Students will be able to write the formula for Type III Compounds. Warm-Up: Identify the following compounds as Ionic or Covalent bonds. CO AlO3 AuO Agenda: 1. Type III Formulas notes and practice.
Type III Molecular Formulas
Overview Type III bonds occur between non-metals and non- metals. These bonds are covalent, which means they share electrons and DO NOT have a charge. This type uses prefixes to tell us how many atoms are present.
Prefixes Number Prefix 1 Mono- 2 Di- 3 Tri- 4 Tetra- 5 Penta- 6 Hexa- 7 Hepta- 8 Octa- 9 Nona- 10 Deca-
To Write the Formula from the Name Determine the elements and write their symbols. Dinitrogen Monoxide The prefix tells us how many atoms are present. Put this as the element’s subscript. If the first element does not have a prefix, it is 1.
Examples Dinitrogen Trioxide Diarsenic pentoxide
Your Turn! Oxygen difluoride Dihydrogen monoxide Carbon diselenide
