Vocab Words Week 2 Mr. Matzka

harangue (noun) a tirade; a long pompous speech People stopped listening after the first five minutes of his awful, self-absorbed harangue.

immoral (adj) habitually engaged in licentious or lewed practices Sue is being judged because of the immoral activities in which she takes part in on the weekends.

interrogative (adj) having the nature or form of a question Rhetorical questions are interrogative even if they don’t require an answer.

kimono (noun) a loose robe, fastening with a sash, the principle outer garment in Japan The women wore very intricate kimonos at the traditional Japanese celebration.

messieurs (noun) gentlemen The boys acted like real messieurs throughout the entirety of the prom.

muleteer (noun) mule driver Before the invention of the automobile, companies used to pay the muleteer to carry their goods.

observance (noun) a traditional form or customary act Many cultures do not believe in driving on Saturdays in order to keep the observance of the Sabbath.

overreach (verb) to stretch out too far It is customary to see many baseball players overreach for a ball and hurt themselves in the process.

perambulate (verb) to walk about It was decided that I needed to perambulate in order to relieve the cramp that I had in my foot.

pledgeor (noun) one who gives a pledge Steve was our biggest pledgeor of the day; he offered to give five dollars for every mile walked.

prevention (noun) thwarting; opposing successfully His prevention of the accident was accredited to his paying attention while driving.

regimen (noun) a systematized order or course of living with reference to food, clothing, and personal habits My daily regimen consists of taking vitamins with my breakfast.

rigmarole (noun) nonsense I cannot tolerate the constant rigmarole that takes place during every class.

severance (noun) separation The severance between the two boys was a good thing because each is getting much better grades.

stringent (adjective) rigid The rules that the soccer team developed were stringent but very reasonable.
