Nanotechnology - long term science or today’s reality ? Jouko Yli-Kauppila Nanoday for Companies NSC, Jyväskylä 28.10.2009

Nanotechnology Challenges in industrial world Is nano only a “hype” or a real option for us ? "Nano“ is one of the top issues in most research agendas, funding applications and technology communications - can all the good be true ? Sigificant amount of money and resources spent world wide will give breakthrough results in several applications Estimated business volume is 1.100 B$ between 2010-2015 ! Field of nanotechnology is wide and largely unknown to us How to choose the right technologies to follow the development ? Focus on existing business or on growth opportunities ? How to follow and understand the development of an unknown disciplines ? Own resources are always limited Who are the right parties to play with? What is already available in industrial scale? Opportunity to make money by being the first to apply in own business When to invest on own research and development? What kind of new competences do we need ?

Nanotechnology Potential applications in paper machinery business Improved surface properties of construction materials Cleanliness, friction, …. Construction materials enforced by nanoparticles Strength, stiffness, toughnees, wear resistance, conductivity, ... Automation and control, sensors Process control and condition monitoring Nanoparticles in paper / board Improved printability, intelligency, … Entirely new fiber based products ? New process and machinery requirements ? Friday, February 22, 2019

Nanotechnology Kye issues from great promises to practical applications Right cost / benefit -ratio Availability, quality and reproducability Volume of the business Environmental friendly and free from health risks Public opinion / Customers’ acceptance Friday, February 22, 2019

INTERNAL Close co-operation between researchers and industrial partners is a must Communication is a key Researchers to tell the opportunities of and top players in nanotechnology as well as the capabilities of the scientific instruments available Challange: how to know what are the findings that interest the industrial party Companies to tell the needs and boundary conditions for industrial applicability Challange: how to understand the importance of new findings without own competence Long term private – public partnerships needed Joint projects – practical co-operation is another key Recession slows down companies willingness to invest long term unknowns Research projects must be planned to fit with other RTD activities in a company Public funding for feasibility type research wanted Date Author Title
