“Marigolds” Precis Assignment Mrs. Simpson English 1

Prompt: Explain how the author uses diction or imagery to create the narrator’s voice Evidence should be direct quotes from the story You may use evidence from your voice chart Talk about how specific diction/imagery creates the voice of a remorseful, reflective adult.

Topic Sentence: Introduce your main idea/point and include key words connecting to the prompt. You are telling your reader what your paragraph is about in this sentence so make sure it refers back to the prompt. Must include TAG (title, author, genre) Hint: Reword the prompt so it’s a statement. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, SAY “This paragraph will be about…”

Evidence set up: Must include background information, tell reader what you want them to see, and proper punctuation. The set-up and evidence will end up being one sentence even though it is separated in the outline You only have two choices for proper punctuation (:/,) You should mention literary elements (diction/imagery, voice)

Evidence: Must include proper use of quotation marks and proper citation. Be sure you are taking exact quote out of story There is no punctuation before or after closing quotation marks, except ? Or ! Quote within a quote = single quotation marks Period comes AFTER parenthesis – ex: (247).

Analysis: What does your evidence mean? Where is the diction/imagery? HOW does it back up your idea? How does it create the reflective, remorseful adult voice? Make sure you include at least two sentences in your analysis Make sure you talk specifically about your evidence. If it’s not in your evidence, don’t talk about it in you analysis!

SECOND Evidence Set-up, Evidence, Analysis Same as above; different piece of textual evidence

Concluding Sentences: Conclude your paragraph with two to three sentences that summarize how the evidence proves your main idea. First, restate your topic sentence (NOT COPY/PASTE) Then, write a one-sentence summary for each pair of evidence and analysis (summarize key point from evidence and its analysis)

Eugenia Collier uses characterization in the short story “Marigolds” to reveal that the mark of a mature person is a compassion for others. Lizabeth acts immature as she destroys Miss Lottie’s yard: “I leaped furiously into the mounds of marigolds and pulled madly, trampling and pulling and destroying the perfect yellow blooms”(126). Towards the ending of the story, the author shows Lizabeth being immature, by taking her anger out on someone else’s beauty. The author illustrates how Lizabeth takes her anger out by destroying Miss Lottie’s beautiful marigolds. This shows that Lizabeth wasn’t thinking of how much those flowers meant to Miss Lottie, but only being selfish to help herself feel good. Also, the author shows how the character got caught up in all her emotions. For example ,she was clueless by not realizing that she could be destroying the only thing that made Miss Lottie happy. This shows the reader that Lizabeth is being immature by not thinking of the consequences and how she could be hurting Miss Lottie’s feelings. As Lizabeth thinks about what she’s done, however, she begins to show signs of maturity. Topic Sent
