COURSE SELECTION GRADE 11 INTO 12 (FOR ) Brooks Secondary School 5400 Marine Avenue Powell River, BC º V8A 2L6 (604)

WHY PLAN? "Your life will be no better than the plans you make, and the action you take. You are the architect and builder of your own life, fortune, and destiny." ~ Alfred Montapert

COURSE SELECTION PROCESS Attend Course Selection Information session during E block (April 10, 2014). Attend classroom Course Selection sessions A block Check graduation requirements. Explore careers and post-secondary requirements. Select courses (required, electives, and alternates) and discuss selections with your parents/guardians. Have parent/guardian sign the Course Selection Sheet and return to the counsellors during A block (2 nd session).

WHY IS COURSE SELECTION SO IMPORTANT? The decisions and choices you make determine which courses run next year. When selecting courses you are indicating a commitment to include the course(s) in your educational plan for next year. Not all courses in the Course Selection Handbook will be offered. Insufficient enrolment will result in courses being cancelled. Your alternate choices are important if this happens to a course of your choice.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS You will need to earn a minimum of 80 credits (20 courses) from Grade courses. 48 credits (12 courses) from required courses 28 credits (7 courses) from elective courses 4 credits for Graduation Transitions 16 credits (4 courses) must be at the Grade 12 level

GRADE 12 TIMETABLE Language Arts 12 (English 12 or Communications 12) Elective Graduation Transitions NOTE: You need to have three other Grade 12 courses to graduate. All other elective spots can be used for Grade 11 or Grade 12 courses that you are interested in.

ELECTIVE COURSES Any courses that you choose beyond the required courses. These can be academic courses (Physics 11, History 12, Calculus 12, etc.) or fine arts/applied skills courses (Marketing 11, PE 11, ICTM 11, Metal Fabrication 12, etc.) The Course Selection Handbook will provide a detailed explanation of every course offered at Brooks Secondary School.

OPTIONS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL There are a lot of options for you after you graduate. Its okay not to know right now exactly what career you want to have. It is important, though, to think about the possibilities and start planning for them.

CONT… Why is it important to know which school or program you might be interested in attending? Why would it be important to know about certain careers and how to get certain jobs that you might be interested in doing one day? All jobs/careers as well as post-secondary schools and programs have prerequisites.

SHATTERING MYTHS: MYTH: If I make all of these decisions about my future now, I will be locked into something Im not sure about. The average student across North America will change their major three times. "Shattering Myths." Perspectives: Getting an Inside Look At Post-Secondary. Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation.

WHY POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION? Over the next five years, about two-thirds of all new jobs created in Canada will require some form of post-secondary education ( 1.2 million jobs were lost for those who had not completed high school (Perspectives).

SHATTERING MYTHS: MYTH: Only certain types of people go to post-secondary education. People from all socio-economic and academic backgrounds go to post-secondary. "Shattering Myths." Perspectives: Getting an Inside Look At Post-Secondary. Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation.

DOES MORE EDUCATION MEAN MORE CAREER EARNINGS? More education means greater earnings over a years time. Over the length of ones working life, these differences become enormous.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!! Canadian full-time workers with Bachelors degrees earned 57% more annually than workers who had not completed university. That translates into roughly $1.3 million dollars more over an average working life (40 years). * Just the Facts. AUCC Nov. 4,

SHATTERING MYTHS MYTH: Everyone should choose a job/career that pays a lot of money. Annual earnings is just one measure. Need to think about other measures: -interests and personality -working conditions -employment prospects -qualifications "SHATTERING MYTHS." PERSPECTIVES: GETTING AN INSIDE LOOK AT POST-SECONDARY. CANADA MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION.

SHATTERING MYTHS: MYTH: Certain schools and programs are better than others. Each post-secondary institution is different (different does not equal better). Investigate each school to find a match that will work for your values and goals. "Shattering Myths." Perspectives: Getting an Inside Look At Post-Secondary.
