Essay Zine Design Proposal The “Fashion designer” group Adina Bostinaru, Beata Borisovaite, Daisy Youkhana, Viktorija Tichomirova Essay Zine Design Proposal

Chosen designers Thomas Burberry Elsa Schiaparelli Coco Chanel Henry Wolf Adina Bostinaru Beata Borisovaite Daisy Youkhana Viktorija Tichomirova

The four of us were combined in a group since all of us were analyzing fashion and fashion-related designers. The idea of the zine is to visualize our essays in a creative and well-designed folding zine. Purpose

Initial ideas The following steps of creating the zine were: Choosing the folding method and paper format Deciding on the three-colour colour pallete Thinking of an illustration which demonstrates our designers Gather our essays, illustrations and bibliography for content Layout everything on the folding option

Folding ideas The initial idea was a simple circle, divided in eight pieces like a pie. When folded it would have two “pages” open On the other side of the folding zine we thought putting an illustration, filling the whole area

Folding ideas The second idea was a folded square which would open and show the contents (our essays) The other side would have an illustration

Folding ideas The third idea is similar to the previous, except the paper is not cut, thus, changing the direction how the paper folds (not from inside out). We tried to imitate the folding like from the picture below.

Folding ideas The last idea was the folding we actually considered taking as the main one, so we continued to develop our own layout for it. This folding method is simply a square with cut out bits and then folded like an accordion into a small square.

Colour pallete Our colour decision was based on the Burberry pattern Coco Chanel designs were often in black colour Schiaparelli would also make dresses and coats in black and add other colours, like red. Wolf’s magazine covers were mostly black white and red

Zine Layout in InDesign We tried out placing the ideas on a digital version and think of a way how the zine would look like The front cover, bibliography and main illustration would be in the outside part of the fold The whole text (all four essays) would be in the inner part of the zine Issue: We still thinking of a way to layout the 8000 word content on the less than a square size format

Illustrations We were inspired by Henry Wolf’s Harper’s Bazaar magazine cover and decided to create a similar look to the design pieces we analyzed in our essays The idea concludes in lining out the silhouette of the designs with coloured cutout stripes We’ll also use the Bodoni typeface to imitate a similar look of the Bazaar “logo”
