Technological Systems, 3rd Edition STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 Technological Systems, 3rd Edition Student Resource 3.1.1 System Interaction TITLE SLIDE On this slide, specialists should insert the logo of the agency where you are visiting. This is usually accessed from the website. When arranging the speaking engagement, ask for a tif or jpg of the logo. POST TITLE SLIDE: When arriving at the workshop site, this slide should be on the screen approximately 10 – 15 minutes before the workshop begins. SPECIAL NOTE: We are now the STEM Center for Teaching & Learning. Our focus is on teaching and learning. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 Unit Big Idea Technological Systems are designed to meet a specific need and can address this need through a variety of functions, processes and interactions with other systems. Use this time to help students develop the big idea in their own words for deeper understanding. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 What is a Tech System? A human-made group of parts that work together as a unit. Refresher on systems, or intro if completing a shorter course © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

Processes within systems STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 Processes within systems Something that happens to or with the inputs of the system. What kinds of processes can you think of? Cutting Finishing Forming Remind students that inputs are something that goes into a system, a resource such as time, money, communication, etc. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 Malfunctions When a component, system or subsystem malfunctions, it is no longer working properly or as it should. What happens when the system doesn’t work properly? System Failure Damaged System Parts or input materials Delayed production Safety concerns What other issues could arise due to a system malfunction? © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 System Interaction System interaction takes place when multiple systems have to work together in a process or within a product. Process Example: manufacturing food products Includes mixing, forming, cooking, cooling, packaging, etc. Product Example: a bicycle Includes gear system, braking system, steering system, etc. Help students to find and discuss other relevant examples. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

System Design & Development STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 System Design & Development What factors may affect the design and development of a system? Budget, materials, production facilities, tooling, knowledge, consumer needs, environmental concerns What other factors would affect the design of a system intended to produce a new kind of chocolate? Other systems and factors may be substituted as appropriate to your local context. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

Knowledge Application STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 Knowledge Application Knowledge from a variety of fields is used in the development of products and systems and the completed system can be used in multiple applications. Facilitate the discussion to include STEM integration, as well as skills and knowledge as they apply to career fields. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc

Applications across systems STEMCenter for Teaching & Learning™ Engineering by Design™ 12/01/2009 Applications across systems Many systems or components are designed to be used in multiple different systems. Compatible parts within a product line, such as three different clothes dryers that use the same belt to turn the drum. A general part that can be used in a variety of different applications, such as general building hardware [Authors: Please include teacher notes appropriately.] © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ [Name of Course Guide] © International Technology Education Assoc
