The boy is now a grown-man and asks himself, “What did I know? What did I know? Of love’s austere and lonely offices?” This quote shows that the man now regrets always taking his mom’s side and not realizing how hard marriage could be. He also feels guilty about not showing his father appreciation. The boy in the story regrets not showing his father that he was grateful for the things he did for him.
