Mitosis vs. Meiosis. What is the difference Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not produce a new organism. Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not.

Sexual Reproduction

Sexual Reproduction Two sex cells come together Sperm: male sex cell Egg: female sex cell Fertilization forms zygote Zygote is immature form that will develop into new organism

What sorts of organisms do sexual reproduction?

Normal body cells Normal cells are diploid Diploid means paired Every body cell has a pairs of similar chromosomes Humans: 23 pairs of chromosomes Tigers: 18 pairs of chromosomes Fruit flies: 4 pairs of chromosomes

Karyotype

Sex cells Sex cells must have half the normal number of chromosomes for that organism Haploid: means single form Why? When egg and sperm come together, the zygote has the normal number of chromosomes Because there are genes from two different parents, there is variation

Meiosis Also called reduction division Process of making sex cells Result: haploid cells
