Science Fayre – June 2013 Braeburn, Gitanga

Science Fayre WALT: Have decided on a topic and started planning the experiment The Science Fayre is at Braeburn Gitanga on Thursday 20th June

What is the Science Fayre? A chance for you to show off your experiment to lots of other people You will have 2 boards to display your work (large in total to display 4 sheets of A3) You can show a video clip You can display a PowerPoint on a laptop You must have all the equipment with you so that you can show the actual experiment There is a “Science Challenge” during the afternoon

What kind of experiment do you need to do? You need to think of an investigation You must have a hypothesis (prediction), method, results and conclusion explained You can also do an evaluation (judgment of how well it worked and why)

Example titles Which teacher has the most bacteria on their desk? How does the volume of a reactant affect the size of the reaction (exploding toothpaste)? How does temperature affect the rate of reaction of an enzyme? How does increasing the temperature of water affect its surface tension? Does doing mind exercises before a test improve memory? How do magnetic fields affect the flow of water?

There are loads of websites you can look at for ideas Google “Science fair ideas” or “Science fayre ideas” and you will find a lot of things One good one is http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com You also have some examples on hand outs Bear in mind we are limited with the equipment we have. Only aim for experiments that use equipment and chemicals that we have used before in class or that you have at home. You also need to be aware that you will have to take the equipment to Braeburn and repeat the experiment several times at the fayre.

Schedule This lesson – look up ideas on the internet and discuss ideas as a group. By the start of next lesson you must have decided on an experiment. Lesson 2 – start writing your method and hypothesis. Tell me the equipment you need and what you are doing. Begin trying out the experiment. Lesson 3 – Continue doing the experiment and start planning and writing your displays Lesson 4 – present your experiment to the rest of the class. Selection of who is going to the fayre. Lesson 5 – final preparation before the fayre
