History of Behavioral Health “To Affect Change One Must Believe in the Powers of Change” Cripple Creek-Victor School District has a School Based Health Center, the Cripple Creek-Victor Mountain Health Center Behavioral Health Prior to SHPG Building Capacity

Alarming Statistics In the first 5 weeks of school, the Cripple Creek-Victor School District had 8 students arrested for possession and/or distribution of marijuana

Personnel Involved Hired 1.0 FTE Licensed School Counselor and a 0.25 FTE Certified Addictions Counselor Collaboration with current Licensed School Counselor and Behavioral Health Coordinator/Contract School Nurse/School Based Health Center Coordinator Collaboration with Alternative Education Programming in School District

Teacher & Ancillary Staff Education In-service from Department of Social Services for Child Abuse Reporting for Educators is completed Mental Health First Aid to staff PowerPoint presentation from CAC III regarding signs, symptoms, and effects of different drug usage and what to look for, as well as a question and answer period Impact of trauma on learning Outcome of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and the impact of trauma on lifelong health and well being

Tiered Approach for All Students to Include: Education, Prevention and Intervention Tier 1-All Students Administration of the TSCC and the SASSI-A2 Two Assemblies Responsible Behavior & Marijuana Workbooks Tier 2-Identified Students Will be implementing The KIDS Journaling System Group Counseling Tier 3-Intensive Counseling with Identified Students

Student Education LSC and/or CAC III Counselors will be in all classrooms once a week administering the KIDS Journal System and pamphlets ordered from SAMHSA Two student assemblies addressing substance abuse and mental health

Goals Identify students who are using/abusing substances Identify students who are still struggling with the impact of trauma in their lives, to include the use of substances Revise substance abuse school policy in regards to implementation of urinalysis marijuana drug testing and breathalyzer alcohol testing for students suspected as “under the influence” on school property Receive support from the School Board and the District Accountability Committee for policy changes Revise Student Handbook and look at accountability Provide services for all students Present on-going achievements and updates to the School Board

Assessment Tools Utilized SASSI-A2-Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory Used to identify students with a high probability of having a substance use disorder, including both substance abuse and substance dependence (94% accuracy) TSCC-Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children Used to evaluate acute and chronic posttraumatic symptomatology and other symptom clusters found in some children who have experienced traumatic events

Data Collection Data collected will identify students for placement in either group or individual therapy sessions, as an intervention piece All students will be assessed twice throughout the year in order to intervene as early as possible with any mental health or substance abuse issue

Cross Reference Study SASSI-A2 & TSCC A cross study will be completed between the TSCC, SASSI-A2, student behavioral reports, and/or counselor information to identify students at risk due to the increase use of substances and trauma related to substance abuse

Student Achievement Goals Student will know the difference between responsible use, abuse, and dependency of a substance Students will be able to identify the difference between maladaptive coping skills and healthy coping skills Students will know a minimum of ten (10) healthy coping skills they will use instead of substance use

Educator Goals Educators will know the difference between responsible use, abuse, and dependency of substances Educators will be able to identify students in need of further treatment due to substance use and/or trauma Educators will understand the impact of substance use/abuse/dependency on learning Educators will understand the impact of trauma on learning

Future Goals Parent involvement and education Increased student concern and accountability for substance use and maladaptive behaviors Increase student awareness and utilization of new counseling services A presentation at the National NAADAC Conference to show the impact of marijuana legalization on our rural school district
