Debatable Claims Debatable – adj. – capable of being debated Debate- noun - a formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sides of a proposition are advocated by opposing speakers. You need to create two claims that answer your research question but are in opposition to one another AND that you have the research to support.

Examples: Create on the front of your packet for YOUR topic Research Question: Should animals be tested on for any reason? Pro Debatable Claim: Researchers should use animals to test medicine and beauty products for human use. Con Debatable Claim: Animals should not be tested on or used in research for any reason.

Presenting Information You must think about the content and the visual presentation of the information. Ask yourself: Content: What information will we need to present? Consider Bias… Make sure BOTH sides are presented equally Make sure the STRONGEST information for both sides are selected Visual: How will we present the information? What visuals will we include? PowerPoint theme? Order of information (What structure will we use?)

Compare and Contrast Informational Presentation You are comparing and contrasting the two SIDES of your controversial issue that you determined yesterday. It is purely informational and will not include your own personal opinions or bias

Organization Vocab –take notes! Subject= a claim or topic Feature= supporting reasons or main idea

There are 2 ways you can effectively organize your informational presentation (take notes on these bullets below) Subject by Subject: Present all the information for subject 1 then move on subject 2 and present that information. Feature by feature: Present 1 common main idea/topic for both subjects, then a 2nd main idea/topic for both subjects and so on. Determine what your subjects are and features are after looking through your funnel organizer. Map out both possibilities for your debatable claims. Then choose what you think will be the most effective. Subject by Subject Example Subject 1: People should NOT perform on tests on animals Feature 1: tests are invalid Feature 2: expensive Feature 3: it’s cruel!   Subject 2: People SHOULD perform tests on animals. Feature1: it saves lives Feature 2: Medication goes to patients faster Feature 3: precautions are taken to ensure the least amount of pain to subjects. Feature by Feature Example Feature 1: Validity of testing Subject 1 (Against): Results are often invalid Subject 2(For): Invalid tests do not get approved. Feature 2: Money and expenses Subject 1 (Against): testing on animals is expensive Subject 2(For): testing on humans is even more expensive Feature 3: Cruelty Subject 1 (Against): It hurts the animals or kills them Subject 2(For):precautions are taken to ensure the least amount of pain to subjects.

To do Make sure your features match each other for the FEATURE BY FEATURE one. If they don’t see your teacher about finding other sources to fill in gaps. After you complete the organizer, decide which one structure you think will be best to communicate the ideas. Once you are done with your organizer, get your group checked off with Ms. Sawyer.
