Scientific Inquiry

What is science?

Science A way of learning about the world and the knowledge gained from it.

Observe To use one or more of your senses to gather information. Senses include: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.

Qualitative “l” for “look” Quantitative “n” for “number” An observation using your 5 senses. “l” for “look” An observation using numbers. “n” for “number”

We infer! Inference To explain or interpret the things you have observed based on reasoning and what you already know.

We predict! Predict To make a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.

Observe All make up Scientific Inquiry! Infer Predict

Observations Inference Picture of a puppy and kitten The puppy likes the kitten The puppy is black and brown and the kitten is fairly light in color The kitten does NOT like the puppy The puppy’s nose is touching the kitten and the kitten is leaning the opposite direction. The puppy is happy
