Essays Gateway Rubric Did you pass? Read your intro – does it make sense? Do I know what Greece/Rome is from your intro? Do you have a thesis? Does it have all three bullet points?

Did you know that you are an MYP student? Middle Years Program (6-10 grade) 5 Different ways to look at learning Human ingenuity Health and Social Education Approaches to Learning Community and Service Environments

Unit 3 Project We are going to be looking at the concept: “Changes and Continuity” During this time period, the following things change: 1. Values and Society 2. How the church is viewed 3. Science

Charlemagne Unites Germanic Kingdoms Many Germanic kingdoms that succeeded the Roman Empire were reunited under Charlemagne’s empire. Today you are going to tell the story of a man named Charlemagne in the form of a children’s book Every slide I do should probably be a page in the book Need to have: Main Ideas and people Simple language Pictures

Warmup I need an actor to demonstrate what happened to the East side of the Roman Empire I need another actor to demonstrate what happened to the West side of the Roman Empire

Pg. 1 Middle Ages Have you heard of “Medieval Times?” Medieval period = A.D. 500-1500 New society rooted in: Classical heritage of Rome Beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church Customs of various Germanic tribes

Invasions of Western Europe Pg. 2 Invasions of Western Europe Do you remember one of the immediate causes of the fall of the Western Roman Empire again? Germanic invasions!!! How would the invasions alter the following? Economy: Trade and businesses decreased Government: cities were abandoned Culture: People become less “civilized”, farming becomes more important nobles

SURVIVAL MODE What do people need for survival? Food & water Shelter What do you NOT care about when trying to survive? Language Culture

Pg. 3 Decline of Learning Germanic invaders were illiterate Education becomes less important Greek knowledge was lost Germanic tribes had a rich oral tradition of songs and legends but no writing Bye bye smart Rome!

Loss of a Common Language Pg. 4 Loss of a Common Language What would happen to the English language if Russia invaded and lived among us? Latin language changed. Different dialects emerged 800s: French, Spanish, and other Roman-based languages evolved from Latin Another example of how a unified empire continues to break up

Concept of Government Changes Rome: Loyalty to public government and written laws Citizenship in a public state Emperors or kings had loyalty Germanic Kingdoms: Family ties and personal loyalty Small communities governed by unwritten rules and tradition Loyalty to chief Even die for them in battle Pg. 5

Pg. 6 Clovis & the Franks Franks held power in Gaul (France and Switz.) Clovis was the leader 496 – In battle, he prayed to Christian God….? They won and he converted 511: Clovis united the Franks into one kingdom Why do we care? Clovis + Roman Church = Politics + Religion

So after what we have talked about, which of the following institutions do you think remained in the Western Roman Empire? Political institutions Economic institutions Educational institutions Religious institutions The Church was the sole surviving institution of the Roman Empire. During this time of political chaos, the Church provided order and security.

Religion in the Middle Ages Pg. 7 Religion in the Middle Ages Monasteries were established Monks and nuns were educated Pope Gregory I Made the Church a secular power (worldly) Center of Roman government Raised armies, repair roads, and help the poor Italy to England and Spain to Germany fell under his responsibility

Pg. 8 Carolingian Dynasty Family dynasty that ruled the Franks from 751-987 Pepin the Short, then his son CHARLEMAGNE Charlemagne – first to reunite Western Europe! Became larger than the Byzantine Empire Became the most powerful king in the West

Pg. 9 Charlemagne Crushed an unruly mob who had attacked Pope Leo III Pope crowned him EMPEROR Why do we care? FIRST time a pope had claimed the political right to confer the title “Roman Emperor” Demonstrated that what was now joined: Germanic Power Church Roman Empire

Charlemagne’s Effects Pg. 10 Charlemagne’s Effects Education revival Learned how to read and write Opened schools to train children and monks When Charlemagne died, his son was ineffective Grandsons divided the empire and lost the strong leadership of the Carolingian kings If kings won’t lead…who will?
