Students are angry, hostile, and resentful. Students dont want to remediate; they want to move on, but they cant. Students need to know failure is NOT an option.

The Teachers Primary Objectives Develop a relationship with the students This math classroom should become a safe place Get students to like math again Most students used to like math... This should occur by the end of the 2nd 6 weeks

The Participation Grade Since this is 1/3 of the course grade, it provides: The freedom to try The grease to get the students participating How the grade is earned On-task = 100 Not dependent on speed or the ability to finish as much as everyone else in the class Is dependent on the student staying on task

The Class Work Grade This is 1/3 of the course grade, it provides: The respect of a grade the student earns by hard work The I did it! to keep the students participating How the grade is earned This is based on actual performance on class work assignments Now for some practical considerations of how this actually works...

All rights reserved. The Class Work Grade Practical considerations All work is class work – no homework is assigned Will the students do homework? Can they do the homework successfully? Lessons should be introduced and explained with clear examples Students work together in peer tutoring groups Students work through problems in sets of 3, checking their work as they go Students ask questions and get clarification as they go, so each assignment is worth more, even if they work fewer problems Therefore, students never work through an entire assignment only to turn it in and realize they failed and wasted an entire class period.

The Test Grade The Test Grade is 1/3 of the course grade The grade is NOT curved This gives students a realistic evaluation of what they know and dont know The test is completed individually Since the tests are only 1/3 of the grade, students wont fail the course even if they struggle There is no review before any test Spoon-feeding the students hurts far more than it helps Every test is cumulative This reinforces the idea that what they are learning is important – it doesnt just disappear after a unit test
