RICHMOND COLLEGE EQUINE CENTRE TVET COURSES 2014

TAFE can be a new beginning for all people who want to work towards a career in the horse Industry. We will make every effort to provide you with the opportunity to learn the skills required to work safely and competently with horses. Richmond College Equine Centre has a vast network of highly skilled teachers and staff who are industry experts in their chosen fields of horse management either in Breeding, Riding or Racing. INTRODUCTION

The Equine Centre offers the following courses to TVET students: Horse industry Studies (Performance Horse) Racing Stablehand In 2014 we will also be offering a new and exciting course not offered before to TVET students CII Agriculture Jackaroo / Jillaroo Course TVET COURSES

JACKAROO / JILLAROO STUDENTS

How to work safely with animals and machinery How to ride horses How to handle sheep How to work with cattle How to drive tractors and quad bikes You will also gain an understanding of: Feeding and caring for stock Pasture improvement and machinery maintenance WHAT WILL I LEARN?

DOGS ARE A GREAT HELP ON A PROPERTY

You will need a number of lecture pads, folders, pens etc. for class notes. You will be given class handouts which should be kept in folders divided into subjects. The library has a lot of good horse and farm books for research and required text books will be issued during the course. WHAT RESOURCES WILL I NEED TO START MY COURSE?

Students will need to wear sensible clothing to meet OH&S requirements when handling horses and other stock. Students will not be permitted within the fenced equine section unless appropriately dressed. Theory classes – comfortable clothing to attend a TAFE NSW college. Practical classes – shirts with sleeves, jeans or work pants, work or riding boots. Hats, sunscreen Riding classes – shirts with sleeves, jodhpurs, jeans or suitable riding pants (no shorts), smooth soled closed in riding boots (no lace-ups) Safety approved helmet, sunscreen WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?

During your course you may have the opportunity to go on field trips to working properties Excursions – Please dress appropriately for excursions off campus. Remember you are representing your college and school when you go into industry. Your teacher will advise you about the type of excursion you are going on to ensure you wear appropriate clothing. Students who dress inappropriately will not be allowed off the bus. Parental permission is required for field trips Singlet tops may not be worn at any time WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ON FIELD TRIPS?

Core units are those that we have to deliver to meet the requirements of the Board of Studies Elective units are those that we have chosen for you. We have chosen these electives to give you a range of skills that will help you to apply for jobs as a Jackaroo / Jillaroo or in any other area associated with Primary Industries. On completion you can apply for credit into other courses with the same or similar units in Agriculture, Performance Horse, Horse Breeding or Racing. ABOUT THE UNITS
