Acids and bases have characteristic properties Learning Objectives: Chemicals (including common household products) can be acids, bases, or neutral Acids and bases have characteristic properties When acids and bases combine they neutralize each other Scientists can use pH indicators to identify chemicals as acidic, basic or neutral. Scientists measure the relative strength of acids and bases using the pH scale 2/22/2019 Anura Hewagama
Safety Clorox: Effects of Acute Exposure to Material: May cause severe irritation or damage (burns) to eyes, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory tract. Harmful if swallowed. You are using a diluted solution of Clorox. Flush with water for any skin contacts Ammonia cleaning solutions: 5-10% ammonia mixed with water. Low concentrations of ammonia found in household ammonia-strength cleaning solutions, are not harmful to healthy people. Precautions should be taken to avoid excessive inhalation or splashing. DO NOT MIX AMMONIA SOLUTION AND CLOROX. Cl2 gas produced can be harmful. 2/22/2019 Anura Hewagama
