Flashback A scene within a story that interrupts the sequence of events to relate events that occurred in the past. Example?

Foreshadowing The author’s use of clues to hint at what might happen later in the story. Example?

Dialect The way people speak, is not always proper language Example?

Irony A contradiction between what happens and what is expected. Three types: Situational – when something happens that contradicts the expectation Example: A fire house catches on fire, A hairdresser having a bad hair day. Verbal – something contradictory is said Example: forgetting to do something and saying “Oh, great” Dramatic – the audience is aware of something that the character or speaker is not. Example: Romeo and Juliet – The audience knew Juliet drank a sleeping potion, but Romeo does not.

Oxymoron A figure of speech that links two opposite or contradictory words, to point out an idea or situation. Example: Jumbo shrimp, run slowly, tiny giant, big little brother, small crowd 3 other examples?

Alliteration Repetition of initial consonant sounds example: Sally sat still and sipped her soda. Another example?
