Properties of matter

Matter Matter is anything that has mass and it occupies space .

Properties Properties are natural characteristics that we use to describe and compare some objects.

General properties of matter There are four different properties of matter: mass, volume, density and weight.

Mass Mass is the amount of matter in a physical body. We can measure the mass of a body with scales and weighing machines.

Volume Volume is the amount of space that a body occupies. Common units used to express volume include liters, cubic meters…

Volume To get the volume of a polygon, we measure the length , width and height. Liters and milliliters are used to measure the volume of liquids.

Density Density is a measurement of the amount of matter in a particular place. Density is an important measurement because it allows us to compare the heavy of two materials.

Density For example, water has a density of 1 gr/cc and wood 0,8 gr/cc.While wood floats in water because it has less density than water.

Weight Weight changes with location. The further from the centre of the Earth, the less is the weight. Weight is the force of attraction between objects due to gravity.

Weight Gravity is what keeps us on the ground. The metric unit for weight is the Newton.

Questions and answers 1)What are properties? Properties are natural characteristics that we use to describe and compare some objects. 2)What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and it occupies space.

Questions and answers 3) How many types of matter are there? There are four types: mass, volume, density and weight. 4)Which is the metric unit of weight? The metric unit for weight is the Newton.
