Student Success Services Hi Everyone! My name is “ “ and I am currently the/a “insert position” at the Student Success Office. Today I am here to talk to you about a few of the services we provide to University of Waterloo Students.

Location So to start off, with a campus the size of ours it’s important to know where we are! The SSO is located in South Campus Hall on the second floor across from the bookstore Can make note that it is same building as visitor's center. The Writing Centre is in the same building as us (you actually go to the same desk to check in with us and the Writing Centre) – one convenient location for multiple services!

International Advising Drop in hours: Monday & Friday: 10:00am - 4:00pm Wednesday: 8:30am – 4:00pm Tuesday & Thursday: 8:30am- 5:30pm Assist students questions concerning: Immigration Medical coverage Financial & employment resources Transition Through the SSO’s international student experience we provide advising for international students. This services is provided to all international students regardless of their year or degree level. The advising programs runs on a drop in basis. This hours are on Monday and Fridays from 10am till 4 pm, Wednesdays from 8:30-4 and Tuesday and Thursdays from 8:30 to 5:30. The international advisors are full time staff members who have the knowledge to assist international students in answering questions for a wide variety of areas. In regards to immigration advisors can provide information concerning study and post graduate work permits, visas and permanent economic class residence. In regards to financial and employment resources, advisors are able to answer questions concerning, basic income tax, social insurance number cards, opportunities for working on or off campus among others. Often coming to a new country to study involves adjusting to your new surroundings, advisors can assist students with pre-arrival information, general information about tenant rights and housing/ accommodations or the cultural adjustment to Canada.

Success Coaching One-on-one meeting Topics such as: managing graduate level workload time management setting priorities and academic expectations reading and note taking Our success coaching consist of one-on-one hour long appointments – usually graduate students meet with a success coach. As I have listed on the screen some of the most common topics which come up. Making the change from undergrad to grad, or to a new grad program, can have challenges and we encourage grad students to offer these resources. Often the hour appointment can go by quickly, so students are welcome to book a follow up appointment with a coach if they are interested.

Student Leadership Program Allow students to enhance leadership skills applicable both on campus and in the community Consists of 12 interactive workshops Offered to both undergraduate and graduate students For students who are interested in developing their leadership skills, the SSO offers the Student Leadership Program (SLP). The intent of the program is to allow participants to explore and enhance their leadership capacities while gaining knowledge and developing leadership skills which can be used both on campus and within the community. The SLP /program is available to both undergraduate and graduate students and consists of 12 workshops which you can complete at both your own pace and in any order. Upon completion participants will receive a certificate to acknowledge their completion. Students however are not required to complete all workshops and are welcome to pick and choose workshops based on their interests. Like the study skills workshops registration is done through leads under student leadership program

Opportunities at the SSO Want to get involved? The SSO also provides many paid and volunteer positions for University of Waterloo students. For example, both the SLP and study skills workshops are facilitated by students. We also hire students to help with large projects like graduate and international student orientation. Our programs are growing and evolving so there are always opportunities to get involved.

Positions are posted on a semester to semester basis so check out our the opportunities tab on our website in addition to leads under jobs for further details

Portal Portal is one of the SSO’s tools that allows students to collect information from across the university and keep it on one spot.
