Old Stone Age and New Stone Age Graphic Organizer (2-tab book)

Old Stone Age Started 2 million years ago – ended 8000BCE Ppl were nomads=wandered in search of food -Didn’t have a permanent home/followed herds -Moved with seasons 4 hominid groups lived in this time -all but Lucy Cave art was made

Old Stone Age A.K.A. the Paleolithic Age No written records Life very difficult –always “One meal away from starvation” (from first farmers video) Wandered in small groups Only 1-2 kids per family bc had to carry them Almost 2 million years of time, very little progress

Old Stone Age Tools made of stone, bone, antler Hunted animals Gathered plants, fruits, nuts, berries No stable food supply Temporary shelters in caves, or simple tent-like structures Groups of  20 to 60 people wandered together Basic survival Rarely traded bc usually didn’t have extra amount of things to trade

New Stone Age AKA the Neolithic Age Started about 8000BCE and ended about 3000 BCE Discovered how to plant seeds to grow own wheat, then other crops= domesticating plants/agriculture Began to live in one place and build permanent shelters

New Stone Age Domesticated animals=train wild animals to be useful to humans -sheep -donkeys/horse -cows -dogs -goats -chickens These animals provided items daily, and ppl could eat them if wild game wasn’t available Wild game=deer, bear, every bird, etc

New Stone Age Ppl still hunted animals Ppl still picked fruits, berries, and nuts Domestication of plants and animals=stable food supply, even a surplus (=extra amount that you don’t need) Ppl started to specialize (learn a certain skill) - different jobs became the norm   -While some people grew crops, others built houses and made tools More food=more people=need to keep having to grow more and more food Ppl were building better shelters, better tools, better clothing

New Stone Age Ppl learned to cooperate to do a task more quickly and efficiently Having enough food for everyone and a growing population let ppl: have the ability to protect their cities &defend themselves Have time  make themselves, and their surroundings, more beautiful by decorating their pottery & baskets, making shiny jewelry & mirrors.  House builders added special rooms to honor the gods and goddesses they believed in.

New Stone Age As people settled in towns and villages, trade became a more common activity. people trade to get resources they do not have in their own area Traders often traveled hundreds of miles in search of new & different materials. They crossed mountains on foot, rode donkeys across deserts, & sailed the Med. Sea on ships Popular items included flint & obsidian Trade brought ppl into contact w/distant places. These contacts helped spread ideas & knowledge throughout the ancient world.
