Reduce Re-use Recycle Eco Group

Litter: “But that’s what the cleaners are for!” Litter in our school is a growing problem Each year more staff are giving up their free time to monitor at breaks and lunches Items are being put in rubbish bins when they should be in the appropriate recycling bins!! The attitude of pupils that it is not their responsibility is a disgrace and we want to take action!

Recycling Bins: “Aye, we use them at home tae!” North Lanarkshire Council have provided recycling bins to every household so you already do this at home. Recycling bins are also in schools but students attitudes are lacking. Colour coded bins allow you to recycle properly; it’s time to start using them: But do you know what bin it goes in!?

Which Bin does food go in?

Which Bin should plastic bottles go in?

Which Bin should crisps and sweets go in? Do the scrunch test! An easy way to find out if an item is foil or metallised plastic film, is to do the scrunch test. simply scrunch the item in your hand - if it remains 'scrunched' it is foil and can be recycled in the blue bin; if it springs back it is probably metallised plastic film and not recyclable (black bin).

Recycling Habits: “Such a boring chore!” Make this a part of your daily routine the same way you brush your teeth - its really not a chore! Don’t rely on others to tidy up after you. You can’t make a difference in the community if you don’t start with your school. Be proud to be at Airdrie Academy! Be proud to recycle!

Eco Code We want the flag, We bash our bottles, We want the flag, We’re on a high, We want the flag, We’ve improved our surroundings, Our success is astounding, and we need the flag to fly! We fly the flag, Recycle rubbish, We want the flag, That’s what we do, We want the flag, We’re making Airdrie and Scotland a greener place for me and you!
