Don’t Take Shortcuts ELECTRICAL HAZARDS T1908-02 ©2009 Bongarde

WHAT’S AT STAKE People who should be working on energized electrical equipment Fully trained and qualified Properly equipped Authorized to do so Rest of us Basic understanding How to avoid electric shock

WHAT’S THE DANGER Electricity will take the shortest path Could be right through you Electrical shock

EXAMPLE What can go wrong Trained and qualified electrical technician Main drive feed motor Test the motor Electrically energized In a hurry Performed her job from memory

EXAMPLE Used one hand to check the fuses Other hand against a steel control panel cabinet Finger unintentionally contacted a nearby fuse Grounded herself Electric shock Entry and exit burns Followed the proper procedure

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF Important tips: Never attempt unless you have been trained, qualified, and authorized Follow established standard operating procedures Never take shortcuts Use a meter and be aware of what you are grounded to Use rubber matting – minimize grounding Use the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) – never wear jewelry

Final Word Procedures, policies, and rules are in place to prevent electrical shock and other injuries. Always follow all established operating procedures when performing any task.
