What do you know about foreshadowing? Write it down! -I have never heard of it. -I have heard of it but don’t know what it means. -I think it means…

Here little reader. Follow me, my pretty! And your little dog, too! Foreshadowing When the author provides clues about what will happen in the story You can think of foreshadowing as a way of giving the reader a chance to make a prediction about what might happen in the story Here little reader. Follow me, my pretty! And your little dog, too! Author Reader, earnestly following the clues Clues!

Types of Foreshadowing Remember CAPE! Concrete Foreshadowing Abstract Foreshadowing Prominent Foreshadowing Evocative Foreshadowing

Concrete Foreshadowing! What is it? Objects, people, places, colors, and events These clues are not obvious until you look back! Can you think of an example in a book or movie ?

Abstract Foreshadowing What is it? SENSES! Thoughts/feelings a character has or the way a character acts A certain kind of music playing that hints at an upcoming event! LISTEN! When you hear this kind of music in a movie, what might happen next? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb8t3Lt8iJw

Prominent Foreshadowing! The story starts out at the end and then goes back to the beginning, so you already know what is going to happen, you just might not know how it is going to happen. Has anyone read Twilight? How is the beginning an example of prominent foreshadowing?

Evocative Foreshadowing This kind of foreshadowing uses language that leads the reader on: “Little did I know…” “This wouldn’t have happened if only…” Can you think of another way an author might phrase this?

Give us just a taste! THINK/PAIR/SHARE: Why do authors/writers use foreshadowing in their movies/stories? Go back into The Lottery and find two examples of foreshadowing, what kind are they?
