Native Americans vs. Colonists in Jamestown, Virginia Michelle Tang

Jamestown Colony On May 14, 1607, a group of settlers from England landed in Virginia to establish a colony. This colony was later called Jamestown, named after King James I.

Early Problems In the beginning, settlers were looking for gold and silver instead of planting crops. As a result, there was not enough food to go around and people starved. Many people died of disease and starvation. Jamestown almost failed that first year.

Captain John Smith Captain John Smith became the leader and saved the colony. He visited nearby Indian villages to trade for food.

Chief Powhatan Chief Powhatan was the leader of the Indians who lived around Jamestown. He was angry with the English settlers. He captured Captain Smith and ordered him put to death.

Pocahontas Pocahontas was Chief Powhatan’s favorite daughter. She begged her father to save him. Her father agreed and even later sold corn to Smith to feed the hungry colony.

Different Lifestyles The Indians who lived around Jamestown were farmers. They lived very closely with nature and only grew enough to feed them. The colonists had a very different attitude on how to use the land. They want to use as much land as possible. They grew tobacco to make money. However, because growing tobacco wore the soil out quickly, the colonists kept clearing more land.

Conflict In the beginning, Indians felt sorry for English settlers who did not know how to grow corn or trap animals. However, as more colonists arrived, they needed more land. Soon, Indians saw the colonists as invaders. In 1622, Indians attacked and killed about 350 settlers in Virginia.
